| Possible tremor in Milwaukie, anywhere else feel shaking? |
[11 Nov 2009|10:16pm] |
|
About fifteen-twenty minutes ago, I was sitting here at my desk and felt it shaking. The hutch part of the desk was also visibly shaking and creaking a little. This happened twice in about a ten minute period, and my boyfriend who was in the other room at the time also said he felt shaking when he was sitting at his desk. We're in Milwaukie and on the third floor of an apt. building. In the past, we've felt minor shaking from possible tremors, (there was one last week) but the one instance tonight really shook the desk and now I'm cursing living in this crappy building. Did anyone else experience anything? It wasn't just a truck rumbling by, either, I know that much.

I just saw on the Dutch Bros. Facebook page that the Dutch Bros. on 67th and Foster is collecting school supplies for Marysville. From now until the 27th. Not sure exactly what they're looking for but I assume general school supplies and class decorating materials are a definite. I know Dollar Tree has a pretty extensive school supply section-so a good, cheap way to give back. Oh and while you are @ DB have a Pumpkin Spice Latte! Sooo good.

Yes, they'll play on the guilt of our working class, comparing you to the poorest of the poor. Not once suggesting the elite multi-nationalist investor carries any responsibility.
What makes this more transparent is read the bios on the authors.
Martin Hutchiinson - "Previously, he was an international merchant banker for 25 years working in London, New York and Zagreb. In Zagreb, he established the Croatian debt capital markets."
Edward Hadas - "Before becoming a journalist in 2004, he worked for 25 years as a financial analyst for various firms, including Morgan Stanley and Putnam Investments."

Hi DP. I have another insurance question of the day. Your collective knowledge is impressive! Can anyone explain this to me?
I was in a car accident in March. The other party was completely at fault, also, they were driving a rental car. When my insurance company contacted them, the other party claimed it was my fault. I was told by my insurance agent that the claims would go to arbitration, where a neutral 3rd party would hear the explanations, and decide who was at fault.
Now today they called and told me that "car rental companies are not members of arbitration". They can only ask the company to provide an explanation of what happened. If they respond and insist that I am at fault, or do not respond at all, there is nothing more the insurance company can do.
My insurance agent told me that is the point at which they consider an attorney. But because the insurance company is only out $4400, it's probably not worth it to them. I am personally out my $500 deductible. They told my my only other option if the current claim fails is to take them to small claims court.
My questions are: Would it be worth it to take them to small claims court? Why are car rental companies exempt from arbitration? Do I have any other avenues available to me?
Basically, the lesson I take from this is: You can hit another car and get away with it if you are driving a rental car. Just take it back and tell them someone hit you, and you're golden!
If you read all that, thank you so much! I really do appreciate it.

You'll all be very happy to learn that I have a friend who is moving here to find a job.
He's a singer/guitarist (here is an NSFW video of him performing) so he hopes to make money doing that. How hard is it to start out in the music scene here?
I don't see many posts here about being a musician in Portland. Is that because there's nothing to complain about, or is it just that the musicians are always too high to use LiveJournal?

[11 Nov 2009|01:38pm] |
Hey damn tea-drinkers!
I'm trying to get my hands on some certain Stash tea holiday flavors. I love drinking hot tea at work and I'm absolutely craving some holiday chai. Problem is I can't find it in stores. I called up Stash to ask them which stores were carrying it, but the lady could only tell me which stores carried their products - not whether or not they actually carried the specific flavor.
Have you seen either of these flavors in stores? Preferably downtown or eastside?

Hi DP!
I live in upper NE near Lombard and today I'll be learning how to drive stick for the first time. This means I need to find a giant empty parking lot nearby. Any suggestions? I'm looking at churches but as always DP seems to know everything. I guess government parking lots would be good too as it's a holiday.
Thanks!

You may remember my previous post. There is a dog staying at my house, who's owner broke up with her boyfriend, moved out, and left her min-pin/chihuahua mix here locked in the garage. She's supposed to be finding her a new home, but I never even see her around the house. I'm fed up with the situation and I'm taking things into my own hands. This poor dog has been abandoned for months, only being let out of the garage to go pee, and I'm not putting up with it anymore.
She's a very sweet dog, she's lived with other dogs, she's just a little skittish and shy. Her favorite thing is to squeeze between your back and the couch cushions and hide, and she also likes to play fetch. She's about a year and a half old, and had all of her shots when she was younger, at a Petco. I do NOT have these records available.
Any interested parties, please email me at kumori(dot)kaze(at)gmail(dot)com and I will arrange a time for you to come see her.
Please pass the word and help me find this sweet dog a home.
I wish I could get a better picture, but she can't hold still without wiggling her head around...

| Huh? |
[10 Nov 2009|11:28pm] |
Perhaps this question is a "duh" question for all of you, and it's just something that I've missed since I've been driving.
Today a manager at my job (where I drive a company car daily) asked me if I had auto insurance. I happen to have it, even though I don't drive my piece-of-shit car anywhere at the moment, and told her that I do.
Later I was told that I was asked because anyone who drives a company car has to have it. But I was under the impression that one buys insurance to cover...their car. I didn't think that one's personal auto insurance covers them in cars other than the one signed up for by the auto policy.
I know that (obviously) the company has insurance on each of the cars, but what about people with licenses that do not have auto insurance because, perhaps, they do not have a car? Should they not be driving other people's cars?
OMGSOMEONEEXPLAIN.
(EDIT: Maybe it is part of the company's insurance policy to only allow insured drivers to drive the company cars?)

So...I'm running low on funds and want to go grocery shopping someplace with good deals. I need proteins like chicken breast, tuna, and beans. I also need greens like broccoli, asparagus, and spinach. I need to grab bread and maybe some assorted good dry snacky foods. Where do you recommend I go? I don't have a car either which kind of sucks because I wanted to go to Freddy's, Safeway, and Tj's to price compare. I'd like 60 bucks to go a long way and not just be one bag of groceries like it sometimes can.

There may not be many good jobs in Portland, but if you have a library degree you could try for the full-time Grateful Dead Archivist position at UC Santa Cruz. I figured, why not post it here? I helped a Voodoo Barber get a job not too long ago...
The job pays $52,800-$68,800. Nothing on the info sheet about a drug test being needed. (Maybe you should have to test to prove that you're *taking* drugs, so you can properly understand the material.)

| Book Drive for the Children's Book Bank |
[09 Nov 2009|07:47pm] |
Hey, DPers. Are any of you parents, or recently beholden to them? Are you or your children not as young as they used to be? Do you have books sitting around that never seem to get read anymore, despite the bewildering assortment of words "A" seems to have been for? If so, or if any number of other more specific circumstances hold, please consider bringing some old children's books to my book drive for the Children's Book Bank. It's this Friday, November 13, anytime from 1:30 to 6:00 PM. Located on Reed College campus (map) in the lobby of the Hauser Memorial Library (map), very close to a parking lot.
The Children's Book Bank, and by extension this drive, aims to collect "new or gently used" children's books (in particular those targeted at children 5 or under) and redistribute them to low-income households whose children might have had few or no books at all beforehand. I love Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel as much as you do, but isn't it possible that some of those other books you just don't need anymore? Not as much as someone else does?
"The Children’s Book Bank is committed to being a source for free "read aloud" books for children in need. Board books, picture books, alphabet books, books about numbers, colors, animals, shapes and words, story books, rhyming books, Dr. Suess (sic) books, and books in Spanish are greatly needed. Please, no encyclopedias, no musty or damaged books, and no school text books. Early chapter books are acceptable, but at this time our focus is on gathering books for children under the age of 6."

| Google Voice vanity numbers |
[09 Nov 2009|03:43pm] |
Hi! just a helpful hint, if you want a google voice number but are caught up because you want a hellza cool "vanity number", there are some open in the (434)-933-???? (Ifixed-????). Also, obviously, there is (Ifi)x??-????. Also many in (pol)y??-????, though polynomial is already taken, sorry.
Also, I'd really appreciate any feedback on data-only plans. Using the ipod touch as an internet/VoIP phone isn't really working out as well as I'd hoped, mostly due to the lack of ubiquitous free wifi. I'm thinking something like an internet tablet or "palmtop" or something (open pandora, nokia n810.) Any of you use(d) something like this? Also I don't want a voice plan at all.

Familiarity with distributed/clustered computing concepts would be a plus. We're a small software company with offices in Beaverton. So I was trolling Wikipedia the other day, looking up official 'state' things, like state bird, state dance, state beverage, etc.
So I ran across the Oregon state song, entitled "Oregon, My Oregon" (how freakin' inventive), but I just about lost my shit when I read the lyrics:
Onward and upward ever, Forward and on, and on; Hail to thee, Land of Heroes, My Oregon.
Wait, rhyming "on and on" with "Oregon"??* What's the deal here? Is our state song incorrect, or are we? Or perhaps the pronunciation has just mutated since it was written in 1920?
*They also rhyme it with "setting sun," so maybe they were just plain stupid.
