Hello,
I'm looking to buy some pepper spray to use in case of dog attacks on an upcoming bike trip. Anyone know where to buy it in Portland (if they're open on weekends, it's a plus)? The Google was not helpful.
Thanks!

***** EDIT ***** SUNDAY ALSO !!!!
Hey yo!
So my house is clearing out this month and we have a bunch of lovely things we don't need or want or stuff we think you should have.
The list includes some furniture like a turn of the century white hospital bed, some chairs, some lamps, some end tables... odds and ends mostly, vintage playboys, vintage toys, star wars stuff, a couple cute belts and hats a Buster Bros upright arcade game... you know, all kinds of stuff!
You should come take a looksie and see what we got!
101 NE 53RD Ave Portland Oregon 97213
that's the corner of NE 53rd and Couch.
Don't mind the yappy dog, he didn't get a good nights sleep :}
EDIT: Sunday open from 9am-2pm and we still have pretty much all the larger items you asked about yesterday!
I am probably willing to go down on prices if you come in person and check it out- I kind of have to get these big pieces out of here this week!!

I forgot to mention the complete nintendo and super nintendo complete with games and controllers ...
records, cds, dvds, books, and VHS
a big vintage trunk !
star wars toys, handmade accessories, girls vintage clothing, cameras, shoes, bags, sweaters, $1 box clothes...

| So I have this old old picture. |
[19 Dec 2009|12:48am] |
It was probably taken around 1974. It's on the larger side, probably around 54" square.
It retains a lot of sentimental value for both me and my mother. However, since it is old, it's very brittle. There are several large rips in the picture, and some noticeable damage to the image.
What I'm sort of hoping to do is two things.
1. have the image digitalized, so I can hopefully have the image restored, and give my mom a nice surprise for her birthday. Please note, I'm not looking for someone to restore the picture, only help me get it scanned in.
2. get the damned thing framed or matted or something, so it can be hung up again.
All truth be told, I'm not even sure where to begin looking for a place that does that. Do you guys have any suggestions?

| December Meetup |
[18 Dec 2009|06:55pm] |
TUESDAY DECEMBER 22ND AT 7PM
Come eat, drink and be merry!
McMenamin's Tavern and Pool 1716 NW 23rd
Minors welcome until 10pm* *I've noted quite heavily that if you show up close to 10 with a minor or as a minor they will probably not serve you, this may just be the Ram's Head down the street, though.
Meetup FAQ needs to be changed, but basically be nice, polite, you know the drill! And if you have any questions, message me and I can try and clear things up!
There probably won't be many of us since it is three days before Christmas, but hey, if you can make it, we'll try and enjoy a lively little evening the way only Portlanders can! I might even make some cookies for those who show up.

I'm assuming there's a lot of talent in this community-- I have too many white, boring, apartment walls that need decorating, so I'm looking for prints for framing (or already framed pieces). I'm curious as to if any of you have your work up online anywhere I could browse. (I'm not in portland, so please be willing to ship?)
Show off! Sell things! Decorate my walls! Everyone wins.

[18 Dec 2009|02:02pm] |
Is there any way for me to force all comment threads in DamnPortlanders (and other areas of LiveJournal, although DP is the one I read the most) to not friggin' collapse comments? I'm sick of having to expand every sub-thread, and waiting for the page to reload.
I looked in my account under "Display" but found nothing specific to this.
Anyone?

| Debunking the news story about the happiest states: |
[18 Dec 2009|02:24pm] |
So, this morning there was a news story that someone had put together a list of the states in order of happiness, using some "16 secret herbs and spices".
The researchers might have actually known what they are doing, but once something like this enters the popular media and some people will accept it, and turn it into popular legend. This is particularly true because the list seemed to show that some rural, conservative states were the happiest while some urban, liberal states were the unhappiest. (Oregon was the 30th on the list).
So, I decided to do what I usually do: scatterplot! I decided to compare the states' happiness to their suicide rate. And this is what I got:

The states on the left are the "happiest", and the states going upward have the highest suicide rate. As can be seen, some of the "happiest" states have the highest suicide rates, and some of the "unhappiest" have the lowest. New York, for example, is the "unhappiest", but also has the lowest suicide rate. (Oregon is unhappy, with lots of suicide, so it actually fits in with something).
Although, I don't think my debunking will penetrate very far: this list will probably be repeated endlessly as a piece of folk wisdom anyway, especially to prove that good, rural, traditional folk are way happier than those neurotic coastal liberals.

| introducing myself! |
[18 Dec 2009|03:24pm] |
dearest damportlanders,
my name is chantilly. i've been a community lurker for quite some time. but i never post, because i don't actually live in portland. i live in brooklyn, ny. still, i watch the community because it's entertaining, funny as hell, and occasionally informative.
i know you accept all kinds of posts, not just ones about portland. so i was hoping to give this a shot with minimal snark, and while trying to be the least spamerific as possible. i'm a musician. i've made an album. i'm proud of it and want folks to listen. people have compared what i do to:
* she & him * cat power * jenny lewis * feist * other good people
you can download the whole shebang at http://chantillysongs.bandcamp.com, and find out a little more about it/ me at myspace.com/chantillysongs. i have absolutely no big budget, no pr company, no label. i do this all myself, and am relying on people who like to discover new music to get the word out ;)
this is what the cover art looks like:

i know this kind of self-promoting post can be annoying, but please know that i'm NOT trying to spam your community (although you might find the message x-posted in a few other places.) i have nothing but love for the dp.
thanks so much for reading :) i hope some of you like what we've done. xoxo.

Anyhow...do any of you lovely, oregon winter-experienced DPs have any recommendations for either brands, or where i can go to purchase these without being made to feel like i am a total idiot and they will laugh at me when i walk out with the wrong size or something?
i'm in n/ne but i can get wherever.
any info or tips are appreciated! thank you!!

Prior to the birth of my son earlier this year, my wife and I bought a glider off of Craigslist. It worked well for a few months, then developed a terrible, brain-rattling squeak that rendered it pretty much unusable. I tried every kind of remedy that people suggested to me... nothing worked for more than about an hour. Eventually my wife implored me to fix it or light it on fire.
Upon taking it apart, I discovered that one of the metal posts (for lack of a better term) on the base was bent, and the ball bearings fell right out. The other three of these were fine.
To sum up, I have a disassembled glider that I have no idea how to repair. My wife has already purchased another one, so we don't even need the thing. It's just taking up space, unless you count being used as a place to sleep by one of our cats.
Someone with the know-how could probably fix it. So, DPers... anyone have an idea how I could get rid of this thing without just dumping it in the landfill?

| The Public Transportation Stereotype Game |
[18 Dec 2009|08:59am] |
The rules are simple. Come up with some public transportation stereotypes complete with name and description, but you have to avoid the obvious ones. The funnier and more relevant, the better. For example:
- The Hopeful Librarian. You are not ever going to digest the complexity of Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities" between 28th and downtown. Especially when you keep looking up to see if anyone is noticing how smart you are.
- Castor & Pollux. There's two of you, but only one seat. The only logical choice is for one of you to sit and the other to stand in the aisle and creepily hover over them. Never mind that you're in the way for others to get on or off, being more that 6 inches away from your partner for even 10 minutes is unbearable. Ignore the weird brother on brother reference.
- The Herded. Those people who stand in the aisle but treat the 2 steps in the back of the bus like its a cattle guard... no matter how full it gets they just won't go up. Probably because they're afraid their hooves will get stuck.
- The Gatekeeper. You still on the aisle seat with express purpose of forcing people to ask for your permission to sit in the windows seat. I can't only guess that you've seem to have lost control over the rest of your life, so you're going to exert a little control on the bus. Any other reason is just denying the fact that you're riding on public transportation with, you know, other people.
- The Blind Snowflake. I'm sure whatever noise is coming out of your iPod totally unique and special, even as you ignore the irony of the easily identifiable ipod headphones, but unless you're Jimi Hendrix, I'm pretty sure it's not affecting your vision... You're sitting in the old people seats and an old person just hobbled past you. But don't worry, if you stare into the middle distance a few more seconds, someone else will move.

| Down-home camera shop? |
[17 Dec 2009|04:01pm] |
So I've sprung for a DSLR. Bought it off the interwebs, but knowing me, this is just the start of a long string of obsessive behaviors surrounding gear to get that perfect picture.
Where I come from, there were a couple of non-chain local shops that I would just drop into every week, look over their stock, and talk with the people behind the counter about stuff we (I and they) were doing. The people behind the counter were typically not only heavy-duty enthousiasts, but also, for the most part, the shop owners.
I'm looking for something like that here in SE PDX. Not a Ritz-chain-esque store, but some place where the employees have names, they recognize you when you come in, and they'll put up with regular visits which result in semi-regular gear purchases from a loyal customer. I bought the camera off the webs, as I say, but moving forward, I'd rather deal with people.
Any of you photogs have a favorite place? Close to Reed College is best, but for an awesome place, I'll travel.
Basically, I'm looking for the camera shop equivalent of a bar or a barber shop...

| Ah, the holiday season... |
[17 Dec 2009|02:16pm] |
...my favorite time to avoid all retail outlets by the widest margin possible. And yet I have been given the task of finding a store that sells gloves that are sized in numbers (like, size 5,6,7, as compared to small, medium, large). I imagine a place like Macy's (and other stores that are basically the same with a different name) probably has numerically-sized gloves. I'd really rather not go to Macy's (etc.) though, especially since they're usually inside/attached to malls. Any suggestions of the least ridiculously-crowded-and-annoying place I could possibly go to fulfill my mission? I live in outer SE (not far from clackamas), work in outer eastside NE and also at Gresham station, so proximity to any of those places is a bonus. Price is not an issue. Thanks!

| Some free shit |
[17 Dec 2009|12:06pm] |
So, I got these two things as gifts.
They are really awesome gifts, but I have $19 until the new year, so I'm not going to be able to utilize them.
Because of their nature, they cannot be bartered. Therefore, I am giving them away to whomever wants to come get them.

One is a pass to the Columbia employee store. Apparently, this is a really amazing thing. I would love to go, but it seems like a waste to use it on myself when I won't be able to buy anything. Please only comment with your desire to claim it if you can utilize it. I think that's only fair. It expires on New Year's Day. ALSO GONE!
The other is a coupon book for Saturday Market. These coupons all expire on 12/24. You could use them this weekend and get some nice gifts. There's all kinds of stuff in here. There's so many coupons, I doubt one person could use them all, so think about splitting them up among friends. GONE!
While I drive, I am lazy and all I want to do is paint some stuff. Therefore, if you want either of these, you should also want to drive to close-in NE to get them.

| Cheap Meat |
[16 Dec 2009|03:19pm] |
So -
I rather like the cheaper cuts of beef, lamb, poultry (and goat, if it's around) etc (not so much on the organs though) and the stores around here either sell things like oxtail as if it were gold or don't carry it at all.
Is there a butcher/butcher shop - open to the public (as opposed to resturant wholesale) that offers meat affordably? I'm not looking so much for the yuppie focused places but the old style white linoleium butcher shops. Also - on the bus or max line since I don't own a car.
Anything like that out there?

So.. this is like.. pretty amazing to me.
On the Opie & Anthony show when they brought this guy on they had no idea he could sing. It was just going to be a radio bit promoting their upcoming “homeless shopping spree.” During the interview it came up that he has written some songs and could play guitar. So they went and got the man a guitar (he did not own one himself) and he proceeded to shock the hell out of everyone.
NSFW: Language ( Video Under Here ) There are links off this video to the actual O&A studio set where he played this. I hope this helps the guy in some way. Fuck American Idol. This guy has real emotion in his voice.

| How to avoid the crass commercialization of the "holidays" |
[16 Dec 2009|11:30am] |
Herewith be a partially tongue-in-cheek method of avoiding Christmas etc. overload:
*Don't work retail
*Don't watch television
*Don't listen to the radio
*Don't go shopping, especially in malls or big-box stores
It's amazing how much less stressful the month of December is now that all those things apply. Yes, I realize some people have to work retail--I did it for years. Yes, I realize I live in a cave. Right now? That's totally fine with me. We have a lovely tree in the living room and I only listen to Christmas music when I want to. So nice and relaxing!

| It's wet, I'm cold--shopping tips? |
[16 Dec 2009|11:17am] |
|
Hi all! I've recently moved into an apartment and no longer have a car, and I'm being slapped in the face with the reality of winter in Portland :) I didn't realize how spoiled I was until I had to spend much of yesterday walking around town in a pair of boots I'd formerly thought of as "water-proof" and a coat I'd considered "warm," only to wind up soaked, freezing, and grumpy after a very short time! So, in the spirit of becoming a true Portlander, I need to acquire some good cold-weather/rain gear for as cheap as possible. Before I start making my merry, wet-footed way around to the various thrift stores and such in town, does anyone have any recommendations on where the best place(s) would be to find good, cheap, warm clothes (specifically some hoodies, a rain jacket, hats, gloves, scarves, and possibly some thermal undergarments)? Thank you in advance!
